{"id":14414,"date":"2023-02-14T11:07:30","date_gmt":"2023-02-14T16:07:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/blog\/?p=14414"},"modified":"2023-02-14T11:36:20","modified_gmt":"2023-02-14T16:36:20","slug":"native_profile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/blog\/2023\/02\/14\/native_profile\/","title":{"rendered":"Introducing our profile of Native incarceration in the U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nOur <a href=\"\/profiles\/\">50 state profiles<\/a>, plus one for<a href=\"\/profiles\/DC.html\"> D.C.<\/a> and another for the <a href=\"\/profiles\/US.html\">nation<\/a> as a whole, draw on graphs made from reports issued as part of our <a href=\"\/national\/\">National Incarceration Briefing Series<\/a>. Adding to this body of work, we&#8217;ve created <a href=\"\/profiles\/native.html\">a profile of Native incarceration in the United States<\/a> to illuminate what data exists about the mass incarceration of Native people.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIn the United States, Native people<sup id=\"fnref:1\"><a href=\"#fn:1\">1<\/a><\/sup> are vastly overrepresented in the criminal legal system. Native people are incarcerated <i>in state and federal prisons<\/i> at a rate of <a href=\"https:\/\/bjs.ojp.gov\/sites\/g\/files\/xyckuh236\/files\/media\/document\/p21st.pdf\">763 per 100,000 people<\/a>. This is double the national rate (<a href=\"https:\/\/bjs.ojp.gov\/sites\/g\/files\/xyckuh236\/files\/media\/document\/p21st.pdf\">350 per 100,000<\/a>) and more than four times higher than the state and federal prison incarceration rate of white people (<a href=\"https:\/\/bjs.ojp.gov\/sites\/g\/files\/xyckuh236\/files\/media\/document\/p21st.pdf\">181 per 100,000<\/a>). These disparities exist in jails as well, with Native people being detained in<i> local jails<\/i> at a rate of <a href=\"https:\/\/bjs.ojp.gov\/sites\/g\/files\/xyckuh236\/files\/media\/document\/ji21st.pdf\">316 per 100,000<\/a>. Nationally, the incarceration rate in local jails is <a href=\"https:\/\/bjs.ojp.gov\/sites\/g\/files\/xyckuh236\/files\/media\/document\/ji21st.pdf\">192 per 100,000<\/a>, and for white people, the jail incarceration rate is <a href=\"https:\/\/bjs.ojp.gov\/sites\/g\/files\/xyckuh236\/files\/media\/document\/ji21st.pdf\">157 per 100,000<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"featureimage caption\"><picture><source type=\"image\/webp\" srcset=\"\/\/static.prisonpolicy.org\/images\/native_correctional_control_2023.webp 1x, \/\/static.prisonpolicy.org\/images\/native_correctional_control_2023-2X.webp 2x\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/static.prisonpolicy.org\/images\/native_correctional_control_2023.png\" alt=\"pie chart showing how over 70,000 native people are under correctional control\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" id=\"correctionalcontrolnative\">\n<\/picture><\/p>\n<p>\nEven when government data on incarceration are disaggregated by race, the way that Native incarcerated people are counted is inconsistent and often underreports their numbers, because people reporting two or more races are lumped into various categories depending on who is publishing the data.
