{"id":269,"date":"2013-05-23T10:46:18","date_gmt":"2013-05-23T14:46:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/blog\/?p=269"},"modified":"2021-11-19T15:29:20","modified_gmt":"2021-11-19T20:29:20","slug":"dog-sniff-lte","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/blog\/2013\/05\/23\/dog-sniff-lte\/","title":{"rendered":"Massachusetts residents say NO to prison visitor dog sniffing policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We were concerned as soon as we heard about the Massachusetts Department of Corrections&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130326012208\/http:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/local\/massachusetts\/2013\/03\/23\/visitors-could-soon-face-random-narcotics-dogs-sniff-state-prisons\/9lrkscjM5N9DOuBFzX8PJO\/story.html\">plans to start using dogs<\/a> to screen families and friends visiting loved ones in prison. After all, encouraging in-person visits is key to allowing incarcerated people to maintain the family and community ties that are central to success after release. Using dogs to search family members, friends, clergy, volunteers, and other visitors is deeply invasive and degrading, and can turn essential family visits into potentially traumatizing experiences.<\/p>\n<p>We (along with many other concerned Massachusetts residents) <a href=\"\/articles\/dogs.html\">told<\/a> the Department of Corrections, the Executive Secretary of Public Safety, and the Governor&#8217;s Office that <span class=\"pullquote\" title=\"The dog sniffing policy is a terrible idea.\">the dog sniffing policy is a terrible idea<\/span>. And on April 10th, the <i>Boston Globe<\/i> Editorial Board <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/editorials\/2013\/04\/10\/drug-sniffing-dogs-prisons-shouldn-scare-away-visitors\/pSn8CIZs6TDurcyAgdHV2I\/story.html\">warned the Department of Corrections<\/a> about the grave consequences the policy could have. <\/p>\n<p>So, we were very surprised to read in a recent <i>Valley Advocate<\/i> article that Terrel Harris, spokesman for the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, claims that &#8220;the department has received no public feedback about the plan.&#8221; It&#8217;s clear that this statement is, at best, incorrect, as we&#8217;ve clarified in a <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130807003316\/http:\/\/www.valleyadvocate.com\/article.cfm?aid=16790\">Letter to the Editor<\/a> printed in this week&#8217;s issue.<\/p>\n<p>The message is being sent loud and clear: the public knows that this policy will unnecessarily deter family visits and thereby make it harder for people released from custody to successfully rejoin their communities.
