{"id":2718,"date":"2014-09-30T12:57:58","date_gmt":"2014-09-30T16:57:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/blog\/?p=2718"},"modified":"2019-09-18T15:39:53","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T19:39:53","slug":"prison-bankers-captive-customers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/blog\/2014\/09\/30\/prison-bankers-captive-customers\/","title":{"rendered":"Prison bankers cash in on captive customers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Daniel Wagner and Eleanor Bell of the nonprofit investigative news organization, the Center for Public Integrity, have recently released <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/2014\/09\/30\/15761\/prison-bankers-cash-captive-customers\">&#8220;Prison bankers cash in on captive customers&#8221;<\/a> and the video <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/OiZj2wgbedg\">Time is Money<\/a>, part one of a two-part series on the growing web of prison bankers, private vendors, and corrections agencies that profit off the backs of families of the incarcerated.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OiZj2wgbedg?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Center for Public Integrity&#8217;s six-month investigation found plenty of families making necessary sacrifices in order to support and maintain contact with their incarcerated loved one. In order to send money to their incarcerated loved one, family members would sometimes be forced to forego medical care, skip utility bills, and even limit visits with their loved one. Meanwhile, corporations such as JPay, which handles deposits into incarcerated individuals&#8217; accounts, generated well over $50 million in revenue in 2013.
