{"id":5348,"date":"2017-02-01T09:57:57","date_gmt":"2017-02-01T13:57:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/blog\/?p=5348"},"modified":"2022-02-17T09:50:16","modified_gmt":"2022-02-17T14:50:16","slug":"video_update_jan2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/blog\/2017\/02\/01\/video_update_jan2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Support for in-person visitation continues to grow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a January 2015 <a href=\"\/visitation\/\">report<\/a>, we discovered that 74% of jails that adopt video visitation go on to ban in-person visits. Fortunately, the movement to protect in-person visits from video technology has continued to grow. Here are some recent developments we wanted to share:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"\/blog\/2016\/12\/22\/nj_video_bill\/\">New Jersey legislation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.njleg.state.nj.us\/bill-search\/2016\/A4389\">A4389<\/a>, that would protect in-person jail visits and require that video visits cost no more than $0.11\/minute unanimously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.assemblydems.com\/johnson-muoio-bill-to-regulate-video-visitation-rates-in-prisons-clears-assembly-committee\/\">passed the Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>An <a href=\"http:\/\/bangordailynews.com\/2017\/01\/13\/opinion\/editorials\/videoconferencing-is-no-replacement-for-in-person-visits-for-jail-inmates\/\">editorial<\/a> from Maine&#8217;s <i>Bangor Daily News<\/i> called on Maine to follow <a href=\"http:\/\/grassrootsleadership.org\/releases\/2015\/06\/county-jail-visitation-bill-filed-without-signature-becomes-law\">Texas&#8217; lead<\/a> and ensure that jails maintain in-person visits, for the benefit of prisoners and their families, and, ultimately, the state.<\/li>\n<li>\nFifty-two organizations nationwide signed on <a href=\"\/scans\/VideoVisitationInPrisonsAct_SignOnLetter.pdf\">to support<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/114th-congress\/house-bill\/6441\/text\">Video Visitation in Prisons Act<\/a> introduced by Senator Tammy Duckworth.  The Act would require the Federal Communications Commission to regulate video visits. It would also require that the Bureau of Prisons continue to provide in-person visits and only use video technology as a supplement to in-person visitation.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, over 40,000 individuals have signed a Care2 petition in support of Senator Duckworth&#8217;s Video Visitation in Prisons Act.
