{"id":7198,"date":"2018-03-19T12:08:26","date_gmt":"2018-03-19T16:08:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/blog\/?p=7198"},"modified":"2019-03-29T14:00:57","modified_gmt":"2019-03-29T18:00:57","slug":"race-class-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/blog\/2018\/03\/19\/race-class-debate\/","title":{"rendered":"New research ends the &#8220;Is it race or class?&#8221; debate about mass incarceration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Racial biases in the criminal justice system don&#8217;t only apply to poor people, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.equality-of-opportunity.org\/assets\/documents\/race_summary.pdf\">new research<\/a> from Harvard, Stanford, and the Census Bureau covered in today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/03\/19\/upshot\/race-class-white-and-black-men.html\"><i>New York Times<\/i><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Black men raised in the top 1 percent &#8211; by millionaires &#8211; were as likely to be incarcerated as white men raised in households earning about $36,000.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/03\/19\/upshot\/race-class-white-and-black-men.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.prisonpolicy.org\/images\/NYT_raceandclass_Mar_19_2018.png\" alt=\"Graph comparing income level to risk of incarceration for Black and white boys.\" width=\"450\" height=\"340\" style=\"float:right\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This helps explain why even Black boys from affluent families run a greater risk than their white peers of ending up poor. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/scans\/wealthraceincarcerationrates.pdf\">a separate article <\/a>in <i>Race and Social Problems<\/i> noted in 2016, the likelihood of incarceration is higher for Black people than for white people <i>at every economic level<\/i>.
