We&#8217;ve had an incredibly productive year, releasing 11 major national reports, expos\u00e9s, legislative briefings, and guides for advocates and journalists.<\/p>\n<p>There are a few successes I&#8217;m particularly proud of:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"list\">\n<li>Releasing our most detailed version yet of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/reports\/pie2018.html\"><i>Mass Incarceration: The Whole Pie<\/i><\/a>, including richer data on pretrial and immigrant detention as well as separate &#8220;whole pie&#8221; reports about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/reports\/pie2018women.html\">women<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/reports\/youth2018.html\">youth<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Calculating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/reports\/outofwork.html\">the first national unemployment rate<\/a> for formerly incarcerated people, sparking much-needed discussions about reentry reform.<\/li>\n<li>Winning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/protect-prisoners-from-profit-hungry-phone-companies\/2018\/07\/19\/e6489aee-8b54-11e8-8aea-86e88ae760d8_story.html?noredirect=on&#038;utm_term=.168ad5ceb7b4\">editorial board support<\/a> as we fight the merger between Securus and ICSolutions, which would effectively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/9\/5\/17818496\/fcc-prison-phone-industry-securus-merger\">render the prison phone industry a duopoly<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Revealing how prisons unscrupulously trim their budgets by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/reports\/commissary.html\">overcharging incarcerated people and their families<\/a> for basic goods and services, to the benefit of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/blog\/2018\/07\/24\/no-cost-contract\/\">private companies<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Helping state lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/driving\/\">reverse a relic from the War on Drugs<\/a> that prohibits people convicted of drug offenses from driving. (We&#8217;ve seen tremendous progress on this issue in 2018, with three states and D.C. passing reforms.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/static.prisonpolicy.org\/reports\/PPI_Annual_2017-2018.pdf\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.prisonpolicy.org\/images\/annual_report_collage_2018-640w.png\" width=\"640\" height=\"174\" class=\"\" alt=\"thumbnail showing some pages from the Prison Policy Initiative 2017-2018 annual report\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But that&#8217;s not all. In our highly-skimmable annual report, we review our work on all of our issues over the last year. Thank you for being a part of our successes over the last year.
