HB1059 exclusion reaches beyond 1,000 feet

(Map: Peter Wagner, July 2006)

This map was produced for the Southern Center for Human Rights' Whitaker v. Perdue litigation challenging Georgia's HB1059 which proposed to banish people on the state's sex offender registry. This map was prepared by Peter Wagner at the Southern Center for Human Right's request to illustrate that the exclusion zones are significantly larger than simple 1,000 foot circles around prohibited areas such as schools, churches and school bus stops. The statute requires that the distance be measured from the outer boundary of the school, church or other prohibited area to the outer boundary of the registrant's property. This map illustrates that many houses that are more than 1,000 feet from a school bus stop are rendered off limits to people on the registry as a result of HB1059.
