Chart showing that 53,000 people are confined for immigration offenses, with 6,000 in Bureau of Prisons custody on criminal immigration charges, 12,000 in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service on criminal immigration charges, and 26,000 in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody on civil detention. About 8% of those in ICE custody are in ICE facilities, and about 92% are confined under contract with private prisons or local jails. Graph is based on the newest data available in March 2023.
