Sources and methodology

Los Angeles neighborhoods
This is the City of Los Angeles’ neighborhood as drawn by the Los Angeles Times. We utilized the neighborhoods as defined by the Los Angeles TimesMapping L.A. project because the map of L.A. neighborhood councils published by the city has overlapping boundaries, which prohibited us from accurately seeing which specific neighborhood imprisoned people were from. We only included neighborhoods with at least 500 residents.
Region of Los Angeles
This is the region of the City of Los Angeles that the neighborhood is located in. These regions are defined by the Los Angeles TimesMapping L.A. project and includes nine geographic regions of the city.
Number of people in state prison from each Los Angeles neighborhood, 2020
This is the number of people from each Los Angeles neighborhood in state prison as of 2020. See the methodology section of the report.
Census population, 2020
This is the population of the Los Angeles neighborhood as reported in the 2020 Census.
Total population, 2020
This is the total population of the Los Angeles neighborhood as reflected in the 2020 Census plus the imprisoned population.
Imprisonment rate per 100,000
This is the number of imprisoned people divided by the total population and then multiplied by 100,000. It allows ready comparison of the frequency of imprisonment between each Los Angeles neighborhood of different population sizes.
