List of state and federal community-based correctional facilities, 2012

This table, drawn from the 2012 Census of Adult State and Federal Correctional Facilities, displays every adult state or federal correctional facility that reported permitting 50% or more of its population to leave the facility; the Bureau of Justice Statistics refers to this broad category as "community-based correctional facilities." The populations listed are from the original data source, with a reference date of June 30, 2012.

We attempted to differentiate the facilities that are criminal justice system "halfway houses" focused on re-entry from community-based facilities where people may serve their entire sentence, or facilities that serve multiple or other functions. To do so, we looked up each individual facility and looked for descriptions of the population served (such as "post-incarceration," "reentry," "returning citizens," etc.) or the types of services offered (re-entry, transitional, etc.). The table was originally published as an appendix to the September 3, 2021 blog post "What you should know about halfway houses."
